Senoritas and Margaritas

We kicked-off Women Build 2008 on Wednesday, June 4, at Cantina #1 in the Legends Shopping Center. More than 140 women and men from all over the Kansas City area came out for the event. Cantina #1 provided great appetizers and $3 margaritas to all Heartland Habitat for Humanity Women Build 2008 supporters.

The party started at 5 p.m. giving everyone plenty of time to mingle and get food and drinks before a 6:15 p.m. presentation. We heard from HHfH Director of Development Delía Hernandez and Volunteer Coordinator Kate Fields, who explained what Women Build is all about. The HHfH Women Build program enables women from all walks of life to be the primary volunteers on an HHfH build site. On a Women Build site, women are encouraged by other women to tackle all aspects of construction and quickly become skilled, engaged volunteers and crew leaders. Women working on this home will also work closely with families earning the volunteer hours required to purchase a Heartland Habitat home. Delía and Kate called for volunteers and sponsors for the Women Build 2008 house, which will be located at 1330 Yecker in Kansas City, Kansas.

Celebrity spokeswoman for Women Build 2008 Sandra Olivas also spoke to the crowd of supporters. Olivas, reporter for KCTV 5 news, told the crowd she was thrilled to be a part of HHfH’s Women Build.

“This project is so important,” Olivas said. “It represents women from all over greater Kansas City coming together not only to build a house, but to help a family realize their dream of owning a home while rebuilding a neighborhood and strengthening a community.”

Some Señoritas and Margaritas attendees won prizes in a free raffle, such as gift cards for Schlotzsky’s Deli, Beauty Brands and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I had only been with HHfH for a couple of weeks at the time of Señoritas and Margaritas. It was so wonderful to see an event that we had put so much effort into come to fruition in such a positive way. It was exciting to meet so many women (and men) ready and willing to make a difference in their community.
